My Words to Live By

What is success? To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty; To find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; That is to have succeeded. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

The story behind the story

When I first began writing the story that later became Waiting for Peace, the story was quite different than what you read in the chapters that made it to print. At that point in my life, I had no clue what peace felt like - I definitely couldn't write about it. I was setting out, instead, to write a story to honor the memory of my grandparents who suffered from Alzheimer's disease.

At that time, I was struggling personally, and I had no peace in my life. I had no hope. I had no faith in anything anymore, and my world seemed to have fallen from underneath me. As I began to pour my heart into the pages, however, drastic changes taking place in my life revealed a gaping hole in my heart that I had never before realized was there.

But do you know what I learned about being so broken? Jesus can fix anything! One of my favorite songs puts it like this:

"Something beautiful, something good.
All my confusion, He understood!
All I had to offer Him was brokenness and strife,
But He made something beautiful of my life."

Isn't it amazing how our God can take the mess we've made of things and, not only give us a new life, but a life more abundantly? My life was transformed because of Christ. Through my struggles, I truly learned what it means to be content, and I poured that new-found understanding into the chapters of this book. I hope Waiting for Peace gives you a glimpse into the joy and peace that comes only from God.
