My Words to Live By

What is success? To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty; To find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived; That is to have succeeded. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Every Little Thing You Do

Do you ever get the feeling that no matter how hard you try, it won't matter?? No matter how hard you try to keep a clean house, no matter how many loads of laundry you wash/fold/put up, no matter how many mornings you rush to make the bed before leaving for work, no matter how many meals you cook and dishes you wash... no one cares but you?

That's how I feel. My husband could care less if the bed gets made. In fact, I think he'd rather me not make it in the morning just to save him the trouble of having to move pillows at bedtime.

Also, no matter how hard I work, there will always be one more bill to pay. I don't think I'll ever get ahead. I'm just a little down today (think I may need to rewind and read my blog post about counting my blessings), which is why I keep thinking, "Does any of this matter at all?"

Steven Curtis Chapman has a song I've heard several times on the radio lately. I think this song was written just for me to hear. Maybe you need to hear it, too. All the little things we do are not pointless; everything you do matters to God. Even when no one else seems to appreciate any of your efforts, make the bed anyway. Taking care of your home shows God that you appreciate what He has blessed you with. Tomorrow, when you make the bed, thank God for a warm snug place to sleep.

"You're picking up toys on the living room floor
for the 15th time today
Matching up socks
Sweeping up lost cheerios that got away
You put a baby on your hip
Color on your lips and head out the door

While I may not know you,
I bet I know you
Wonder sometimes, does it matter at all?

Well let me remind you, it all matters just as long
As you do everything you do

to the glory of the One who made you,
Cause he made you,
To do
Every little thing that you do
To bring a smile to His face
Tell the story of grace
With every move that you make
And every little thing you do

Maybe you're that guy with the suit and tie
Maybe your shirt says your name
You may be hooking up mergers
Cooking up burgers
But at the end of the day

Little stuff
Big stuff
In between stuff
God sees it all the same

While I may not know you
I bet I know you
Wonder sometimes, does it matter at all?
Well let me remind you, it all matters just as long
As you do everything you do

to the glory of the One who made you,
Cause he made you
To do
Every little thing that you do
To bring a smile to His face
Tell the story of grace
With every move that you make
And every thing you do

Maybe you're sitting in math class
Or maybe on a mission in the Congo
Or maybe your working at the office
Singing along with the radio
Maybe your dining at a 5-star
Or feeding orphans in the Myanmar
Anywhere and everywhere that you are

Whatever you do
It all matters
So do what you do
Don't ever forget

To do everything you do

to the glory of the One who made you,
Cause He made you
To do
Every little thing that you do
To bring a smile to His face
And tell the story of grace

As you do everything you do

to the glory of the One who made you,
Cause he made you
To do
Every little thing that you do
To bring a smile to His face
And tell the story of grace
With every move that you make
And every little thing you do

In every little thing you do
In every little thing you do."
